Location SAN LORENZO ISLAND - PERU

We all have that one friend who, despite living in the same city, always seems to be globe-trotting. For me, that friend is Lía Lazaro, a talented creative director from Peru whose passion for art and serendipity have brought her to Paris, just as they have to me.

Recently, while following her latest adventures on social media, I was intrigued by her recent journey to San Lorenzo Island in Peru, where she participated in a breathtaking editorial for Jakhu Studio—a London-Lima based jewelry brand founded in 2017, celebrated for its contemporary design, technique and exquisite materials.

It was through this project that Lía introduced me to María Bernal, the founder and creative mind behind Jakhu Studio, who shared with me her reflections on beauty, nature and craftmanship.

“Nature serves as my primary source of inspiration, complemented by the rich geometry of pre-Columbian art. At the heart of each collection lies the essence of my personal life experiences, shaping and driving the creative vision.”

“To me, beauty is the embodiment of harmony and balance—deeply tied to simplicity and the philosophy of wabi-sabi, embracing both transience and imperfection. It is an inherent quality found in certain moments, people, or objects, yet it can also be cultivated by transforming elements of physical or mental reality.”

Drawing inspiration from Pre-Columbian art and culture, Jakhu jewelry is handcrafted in Peru through a collaborative effort with silversmiths from San Jeronimo de Tunan in the Central Andes. The process utilizes locally sourced silver and traditional jewelry-making techniques.

Guided by the timeless language of geometry, the designs are both minimalist and impactful, reflecting the ancient arts and the marvels of the natural world. Each piece of jewelry carries a unique narrative, bridging the gap between ancient traditions and modern culture, transcending both time and trends.

“The essence of Jakhu Studio’s pieces reflects the rich influence of pre-Columbian art and the natural world, seamlessly blending both into each creation.

There is a deep transmission of the artisans' essence in the pieces. This essence is connected to the location of the workshop in the central Andes and its beautiful, powerful natural surroundings. The ancestral knowledge of goldsmithing techniques flows through their hands and hearts.”

“A piece of jewelry can act as a totem or amulet, offering protection at times, and serving as a catalyst or facilitator at others.”
